Perfect for photographers, birdwatchers, explorers, and anyone wanting to disconnect from the modern world, this journey to the heart of Manu will undoubtedly be an unforgettable adventure.

Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Ajanaco – Atalaya – Dorado Lodge

The day begins very early, with pickup from the hotel at 3:00 a.m. to start the journey toward the Amazon rainforest. During the first two hours of travel, you’ll cross the majestic Andes, enjoying panoramic views until reaching the traditional colonial town of Paucartambo, where breakfast is served.

After the break, the route continues for about 40 minutes to the Ajanaco viewpoint, considered the gateway to the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park. Here, registration is completed for park entry. If weather conditions allow, you’ll admire the impressive cloud forest and observe the transition between Andean and Amazonian ecosystems.

From this point, the journey descends through the cloud forest toward Atalaya port. Along the way, it’s possible to spot toucans, tropical birds, monkeys, and, with some luck, even a spectacled bear in its natural habitat.

Around midday, the group arrives at Atalaya, where rubber boots and life jackets are distributed. Then begins a three-hour boat ride downriver toward Dorado Lodge. During the navigation, you may see herons, turtles, monkeys, and many birds along the riverbanks and treetops.

Arrival at the lodge is expected around 4:00 p.m. Upon arrival, rooms with private bathrooms, mosquito-netted beds, solar energy, and charging stations in the dining area are assigned. In the afternoon, there is a jungle walk in search of animals, birds, and giant trees. At nightfall, dinner is served, and it’s time to rest. This first day of the Manu Reserved Zone 5-Day Tour is long, but every moment is worth it.

Day 2: Dorado Lodge – Reserved Zone – Casa Machiguenga

The second day begins very early, with a peaceful boat ride while breakfast is served on board. This time of day is ideal for wildlife observation, as many species are more active at dawn.

During the journey, the boat reaches the confluence with the Manu River, marking the entrance to one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet. The dense vegetation, the silence of the surroundings, and the purity of the landscape allow for a deep connection with the virgin Amazon.

With a bit of luck, it’s possible to spot the elusive jaguar, walking along the banks or resting in the undergrowth. You may also see giant black caimans, which can grow up to seven meters long, as well as white caimans, sunbathing turtles, and a great variety of Amazonian birds.

In the afternoon, there’s a night walk in search of wildlife that awakens with the fall of night. This activity offers close-up encounters with frogs, tarantulas, snakes, and other creatures typical of the jungle at night, providing a different perspective on the area’s biodiversity.

The day ends at Casa Machiguenga, a community-based eco-lodge, built with natural materials by local families. This lodging is located in the heart of the Manu Reserved Zone, offering an authentic, simple, and deeply nature-connected experience.

Day 3: Casa Machiguenga – Cocha Salvador and Cocha Otorongo

The day begins with a visit to two of the most iconic oxbow lakes in the Amazon rainforest. In the morning, the expedition heads to Cocha Salvador, where the exploration is conducted silently aboard a catamaran, allowing for a close and respectful encounter with wildlife.

During the journey, there’s a chance to see giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), as well as howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and rare birds such as the agami heron. The environment is perfect for photography and spotting uncommon species.

Next, a guided walk through the forest reveals the area’s botanical richness. The guide shares insights about ancient trees, like the fig tree (ficus) and the kapok tree (ceiba), both of which are vital to the balance of the Amazon ecosystem.

After lunch, the group visits Cocha Otorongo, where a 20-meter observation tower is climbed. From there, an impressive view of the jungle opens up, and there’s always hope of spotting the majestic jaguar in its natural habitat.

At night, a walk in search of nocturnal fauna takes place, focusing especially on spider monkeys, birds, and other species that become active after sunset.

The day ends with a second night at Casa Machiguenga, surrounded by the deep and immersive sounds of the rainforest.

Day 4: Casa Machiguenga – Hot Springs – Manu Lodge

After breakfast, the return journey begins along the Manu River, navigating slowly downstream through the heart of the jungle. This relaxed stretch is an excellent opportunity to continue observing wildlife, as animal activity remains constant along the riverbanks.

During the trip, there’s a special stop at a natural hot springs area, an ideal place to rest, relax, and enjoy the surroundings. Those who wish may also take a refreshing dip in a nearby waterfall, surrounded by lush vegetation and the sounds of the rainforest.

After this break, the journey continues to the final lodge of the trip, where the group will spend the night. The route allows for ongoing connection with the landscape and a chance to appreciate the subtle shifts in the Amazonian ecosystem.

This day is perfect for reflecting on the experiences of the previous days, reliving shared moments and unique sightings. The tranquil navigation encourages storytelling, group bonding, and a deeper sense of connection with the remote Amazon.

The night is spent at a comfortable jungle lodge, immersed in natural sounds, a final chance to soak in the atmosphere before the return journey begins the next day.

Day 5: Manu Lodge – Atalaya – Cusco

After breakfast, the return journey to Cusco begins. The group boards the boat once more to navigate the Manu River back to Atalaya, enjoying one last look at the natural surroundings and the calm Amazonian landscape.

Upon arrival at Atalaya, private transportation awaits to take the group back to the city. The road trip offers new views of the landscape, with scenery gradually shifting from jungle to the high Andes.

Along the way, there’s a special stop at the Ajanaco viewpoint, where the final lunch of the journey is shared. This location symbolically marks the farewell to the Amazon, and it’s a perfect place to take photos, breathe fresh air, and reflect on the entire experience.

The route continues through the cloud forest and Andean highlands, wrapping up an itinerary that has combined biodiversity, culture, and adventure. Arrival in Cusco is scheduled for around 5:00 p.m., with transfer to each participant’s hotel.

This final day marks the end of a deep and transformative experience in the heart of Peruvian nature—a journey that leaves behind unforgettable memories and an authentic connection with the Amazon rainforest and its people.

I had an excellent experience with Peru Jungle Trips!
I was in Cusco and wanted to visit the jungle originally thinking Tambopata, overwhelmed with options. My desire was to visit the Amazon and be deep in the jungle with few people. I walked into the office and met Pedro who talked with me for over half an hour explaining different options. Ultimately, Pedro told me that Manu National Park is the place to be in the jungle with few people. Pedro helped me book a 6 day tour in Manu National Park 2 days later.
It is hard to describe how special Manu national park was. The trees, the wildlife, the river, seeing uncontacted Natives, and hearing all of the jungle sounds.
I would not have experienced Manu National Park without Pedro and Peru Jungle Trips.
I highly recommend this business!
Also thank you Celia for your kindness and the Poncho :)

Pedro recommended the tour to Machu Picchu via Hydroelectrica route understanding my preference to hike whenever possible. He listened to my questions and came up with the appropriate advice. Not only that, Pedro is very knowledgeable of Inca history and relevant places of interest around Cusco. Thanks to Pedro - I was able to visit Saqsaywaman, Temple of the Moon and Kusilluchayoc!

A great experience without a doubt. I took the 7 day tour to the reserved area of the manu and it was fantastic. The guide was very friendly, the cook always made good food and all the drivers/crew were very professional.

In the reserve we could find many types of fauna and the guide gave information at all times and knew many species.
Excellent tour (4 days, 3 nights) including the first morning at the Belén market. Very friendly. They fulfilled the itinerary with some flexibility and accommodated some minor requests we had. The accommodations are simple and have electricity and internet a couple of hours a day, but most of the time you'll be exploring the surrounding area, almost always by motorboat. Kevin, our guide, was pleasant and interesting; definitely a recommended experience.

If you’re looking for more than just a trip, and want to feel the energy of the Amazon while being guided by someone who truly embodies the spirit of the land, ask for Kevin.

From the moment I arrived in Peru, Peru Jungle Trips made everything feel effortless and personal. Pedro, the owner, greeted me at the airport with a warm, open energy that immediately set the tone for the rest of the journey. He thoughtfully organized both parts of my trip, first to Cusco and Machu Picchu, then deep into the Amazon jungle, handling every detail with care, sincerity.

What made it even more special was the consistency throughout the experience. Every driver and guide I encountered shared the same heartfelt energy. They were easy to find, always on time, and carried a calm presence that helped everything feel aligned. It allowed me to move through the journey with ease and actually enjoy the experience without stressing over logistics.

Then there was Kevin, my guide in the jungle, who took the experience to another level. With a sacred presence and deep knowledge of the land, he didn’t just show me the jungle, he helped me connect with it. He was a kind and gentle spirit, who was fully present. His guidance felt personal and grounded.

Peru Jungle Trips is more than a travel service. It is an experience curated by people who genuinely care. I’m grateful to have found it, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something meaningful and real❤️
