Early in the morning, our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco to begin the exciting Expedition to Manu Reserved Zone, a journey that combines Andean culture, lush nature, and one of the greatest concentrations of biodiversity on the planet.

You will depart in a private vehicle toward the Manu National Park, crossing Andean valleys and traditional rural communities where the scenery constantly changes. Along the way, you will visit the Chullpas of Ninamarca, an ancient pre-Inca cemetery that offers a fascinating glimpse into the past of the Andean civilizations.

The trip continues to the picturesque colonial town of Paucartambo, known for its architecture, historic bridge, and local museum, which you can visit to learn more about its traditions and folklore. After enjoying a typical breakfast in the area, you will ascend for about 40 minutes to reach the Ajanaco Viewpoint (3,500 m a.s.l.), considered the official entrance gate to the Manu National Park and the starting point of the transition to the tropical rainforest of Manu. From this point, you’ll enjoy an impressive panoramic view of the mist-covered mountains and the vast Manu Cloud Forest.

From here, the descent into this humid and vibrant ecosystem begins — home to the spectacled bear, toucans, oriole birds, quetzals, and many endemic bird species, making it a perfect environment for birdwatching in Manu and wildlife photography expeditions.

5. Is vaccination required before traveling to Manu National Park?

Yes, it is recommended to get the yellow fever vaccine at least 10 days before traveling. Also, bring insect repellent and a small personal first aid kit, since the tour takes place in tropical regions of the Peruvian Amazon.

6. What is the difficulty level of the expedition?

The difficulty level is moderate. Daily hikes last between 1 and 3 hours, with mostly flat terrain and some slippery paths due to humidity. No previous experience is required, but good physical condition and a passion for adventure and nature are essential.

7. What kind of wildlife can be seen?

During the expedition, you can spot over 500 bird species and dozens of mammals, including macaws, toucans, howler monkeys, capybaras, caimans, giant otters, and, with luck, the jaguar. The main areas include Cocha Otorongo, Cocha Salvador, and the Macaw Clay Lick.

8. Where is the Matsiguenka community located, and what can be done there?

The Casa Matsiguenka is located within the Manu Reserved Zone, near Salvador Lake. It is managed by the Matsiguenka indigenous community, where travelers can learn about their traditions, crafts, language, and Amazonian lifestyle, promoting sustainable tourism and cultural exchange.

9. What is the temperature in Manu National Park during the tour?

The climate varies by altitude:

  • Ajanaco (3,500 m a.s.l.): between 10 °C and 15 °C.
  • Cloud Forest: between 15 °C and 25 °C.
  • Lowland Jungle (300–400 m a.s.l.): between 25 °C and 34 °C, with high humidity throughout the year.

10. How long is the river navigation during the expedition?

You will navigate over 200 km along the Alto Madre de Dios River and the Manu River, distributed between days 2 and 6 of the itinerary. Each section lasts 3 to 6 hours, depending on wildlife observation stops or visits to lakes and clay licks.

11. Is there cell signal or internet during the expedition?

The signal is intermittent and available only in certain areas on the first and last day. In the more remote lodges, such as Casa Matsiguenka, there’s no connection. This allows for a truly authentic digital detox in nature.

12. What type of transportation is used during the tour?

The journey combines land and river transportation:

  • From Cusco to the Atalaya Port, travel is by private minivan.
  • From Atalaya to the Manu Reserved Zone, the trip continues by motorized boat with comfortable seats and life jackets.

Both means of transport are authorized and designed for operation in natural areas.

13. Can the expedition be done during the rainy season?

Yes, but caution is advised. The rainy season lasts from November to April, when the weather is less predictable and river levels can rise. However, the jungle becomes greener, and bird sightings are often more frequent.

14. What should I bring for the expedition?

It is recommended to bring:

  • Light, quick-drying, long-sleeved clothing.
  • Rain jacket or poncho.
  • Trekking shoes or rubber boots (provided on the tour).
  • Hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
  • Repellent, flashlight, water bottle, and camera.

The guide provides additional orientation before departure from Cusco.

15. Why is the Manu Reserved Zone expedition different from other Amazon tours?

Unlike Iquitos or Tambopata, Manu is a protected area with restricted access, recognized by UNESCO as a Natural World Heritage Site. The Manu Reserved Zone preserves untouched ecosystems and offers an authentic immersion in the virgin rainforest, ideal for lovers of ecotourism, photography, and wildlife observation.

Venture into the virgin rainforest of Manu and witness unique species in their natural habitat.

I had an excellent experience with Peru Jungle Trips!
I was in Cusco and wanted to visit the jungle originally thinking Tambopata, overwhelmed with options. My desire was to visit the Amazon and be deep in the jungle with few people. I walked into the office and met Pedro who talked with me for over half an hour explaining different options. Ultimately, Pedro told me that Manu National Park is the place to be in the jungle with few people. Pedro helped me book a 6 day tour in Manu National Park 2 days later.
It is hard to describe how special Manu national park was. The trees, the wildlife, the river, seeing uncontacted Natives, and hearing all of the jungle sounds.
I would not have experienced Manu National Park without Pedro and Peru Jungle Trips.
I highly recommend this business!
Also thank you Celia for your kindness and the Poncho :)

Pedro recommended the tour to Machu Picchu via Hydroelectrica route understanding my preference to hike whenever possible. He listened to my questions and came up with the appropriate advice. Not only that, Pedro is very knowledgeable of Inca history and relevant places of interest around Cusco. Thanks to Pedro - I was able to visit Saqsaywaman, Temple of the Moon and Kusilluchayoc!

Excellent, very organized. We took the 7-day tour to Manu and Machu Picchu. The agency was always very attentive to us. The food in the jungle was excellent, as were the hikes. The guides, Lucho and Rubén, were excellent.

A great experience without a doubt. I took the 7 day tour to the reserved area of the manu and it was fantastic. The guide was very friendly, the cook always made good food and all the drivers/crew were very professional.

In the reserve we could find many types of fauna and the guide gave information at all times and knew many species.
Excellent tour (4 days, 3 nights) including the first morning at the Belén market. Very friendly. They fulfilled the itinerary with some flexibility and accommodated some minor requests we had. The accommodations are simple and have electricity and internet a couple of hours a day, but most of the time you'll be exploring the surrounding area, almost always by motorboat. Kevin, our guide, was pleasant and interesting; definitely a recommended experience.

If you’re looking for more than just a trip, and want to feel the energy of the Amazon while being guided by someone who truly embodies the spirit of the land, ask for Kevin.

From the moment I arrived in Peru, Peru Jungle Trips made everything feel effortless and personal. Pedro, the owner, greeted me at the airport with a warm, open energy that immediately set the tone for the rest of the journey. He thoughtfully organized both parts of my trip, first to Cusco and Machu Picchu, then deep into the Amazon jungle, handling every detail with care, sincerity.

What made it even more special was the consistency throughout the experience. Every driver and guide I encountered shared the same heartfelt energy. They were easy to find, always on time, and carried a calm presence that helped everything feel aligned. It allowed me to move through the journey with ease and actually enjoy the experience without stressing over logistics.

Then there was Kevin, my guide in the jungle, who took the experience to another level. With a sacred presence and deep knowledge of the land, he didn’t just show me the jungle, he helped me connect with it. He was a kind and gentle spirit, who was fully present. His guidance felt personal and grounded.

Peru Jungle Trips is more than a travel service. It is an experience curated by people who genuinely care. I’m grateful to have found it, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for something meaningful and real❤️
