Day 1Puerto Maldonado – Filadelfia Community – Nocturnal Exploration
Arrival and Immersion into the Amazon
Firstly, upon your arrival, our team will greet you at the airport or bus station and transfer you to our office for registration.
Secondly, we embark on an hour-long scenic journey to Filadelfia, then navigate the Tambopata River for 10 minutes to reach our lodge.
Our guide will brief you on the lodge policies and then you can settle into your cozy room.
After a refreshing siesta and a delicious lunch, we will embark on a two-hour guided walk through the dense tropical forest, where you’ll discover a diverse array of medicinal plants and trees that are over 600 years old.
Our guide leads you to trails and a bird watching tower, providing opportunities to spot exotic wildlife.
Return to the lodge after sunset for rest, then venture out for a nocturnal wildlife-spotting adventure.
On a clear night, we’ll also witness the breathtaking view of the milky way with a myriad of stars and shooting stars.
After a pleasant ecological walk, we return for dinner.
Day 2Boat Ride – Clay Lick – Lake Yacumama
Day 2 begins with a serene and peaceful start, as we sip a warm cup of tea or coffee while preparing for our exciting journey to the macaw and parrot clay lick.
We embark on a boat ride along the Tambopata River, navigating for over half an hour, during which we may catch sight of majestic creatures like jaguars or anacondas.
Subsequently, we’ll arrive at the clay lick or “Collpa Chuncho” as its locally known, we are treated to a breathtaking spectacle of colors and sounds as hundreds of macaws and parrots congregate to feast on the mineral-rich clay.
We spend over three hours marveling at the wondrous sight that the Collpa Chuncho provides, all while enjoying a delicious country breakfast.
Afterward, we return to the boat and venture into the smaller branches of the Tambopata River in search of more wildlife, such as capybaras, tapirs, wild pigs, monkeys, caimans, turtles, and cats.
The stunning scenery of the Tambopata National Reserve and its rivers provides a picturesque backdrop for our journey.
Afternoon Activities
In the afternoon, we make our way back to the city, taking the same route as before.
Upon arrival, transfer to a vehicle for a journey to Lake Yacumama, renowned for its stunning landscape and breathtaking sunset.
The lake is home to hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets, and we may spot black caimans, herons, cormorants, wild ducks, swallows, and even a family of river otters.
We explore the lake by rowboat, possibly catching piranhas for a quick photo before releasing them back into the water.
As the sun begins to set, we head to the pier and board our boat once again to return to our lodge, where we can rest and relax after a fulfilling day of adventure.
Day 3Sandoval Lake – “Matsigenka” Community
One of the best times to observe abundant wildlife is during sunrise or sunset.
We choose to leave at dawn by boat to reach Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
The exuberant biodiversity at Sandoval Lake is unparalleled. We walk a 3 km (1.8 miles) wooden path, constantly surprised by the rich fauna in this area.
At the end of the trail, we board a rowboat to explore the lake and witness black caimans, giant otters, herons, turtles, monkeys, macaws, wild ducks, and more.
We return to the lodge for lunch before noon.
In the afternoon, we visit a family of natives from the “Matsigenka” culture and interact with them, learning about their customs and traditions.
We learn how to use bows and arrows, spin and weave cotton, and make ropes from plant bark. We also witness their ingenuity in making fire using only natural materials.
At sunset, we return to our lodge. As dusk falls, the jungle comes alive with a majestic nightlife.
We venture into the trails with flashlights to search for nocturnal wildlife such as porcupines, sloths, arachnids, insects, reptiles, opossums, night monkeys, owls, and more.
We return to the lodge for dinner and rest.
Day 4Optional Hike – End of Services
After enjoying a delicious breakfast and taking a short rest, we will embark on a leisurely walk along a path where we will discuss the towering giant trees.
We will arrive at one of these ancient trees, over 700 years old, and begin our hanging bridges experience.
These bridges are suspended between the trees, offering breathtaking views of the rich fauna that inhabits the canopy layer of the forest.
Keep your eyes peeled for toucans, hummingbirds, woodpeckers, monkeys, lizards, orchids, and other exotic plants and animals.
In the afternoon, we will return to the city to retrieve any luggage you may have left behind, before heading to the airport or bus station, depending on your travel plans.
