Sandoval Lake is located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
To get there, you need to cover 10 km from the city of Puerto Maldonado, downstream to the right of the Madre de Dios River 45 minutes by boat and approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes on foot to Sandoval Lake.
This lake is formed by a curve of the Madre de Dios River and is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Peruvian Amazon.

The Tambopata National Reserve was officially created in 1990, is located in the department of Madre de Dios, has 1.5 million hectares of land and is considered the largest biodiversity of capital in the world of the Peruvian Amazon.
The Tambopata National Reserve protects the great diversity of wildlife, there are more than 15 lakes where species of animals, such as the giant otter, black alligators, anacondas, turtles, monkeys, colorful birds, and ethnicities that have not yet been contacted, etc.
Day 1Arrival in Puerto Maldonado and Amazonian Jungle Adventure
Your thrilling Amazonian jungle adventure begins upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado.
Our assistant will greet you at the airport or bus station and take you to our office to complete registration.
Around 8:45 am We’ll head to the river port, where we’ll board our boat to the Amazon Lodge (40 minutes away).
To welcome you, we’ll offer a refreshing fruit juice while our tour guide provides information about the jungle hike and lodge policies.
After settling into your reserved rooms, around 11:30 am we’ll visit the Monkey Island.
Here, you’ll have the chance to observe various monkey species, including hybrids, and maybe even spot sloths and turtles.
We’ll return to the lodge for lunch around 01:30 PM
After a delicious meal and a short rest, we’ll embark on a two-hour hike through the dense tropical forest with a local expert guide. Discover medicinal plants and century-old trees while spotting wildlife such as monkeys, parrots, macaws, and more.
We’ll take a boat ride along the Madre de Dios River to spot nocturnal animals like caimans, owls, and capybaras. We’ll return for dinner and spend the night at our lodge.
Day 2Sandoval Lake Exploration and Local Culture
05:00 AM: One of the most exciting moments is at dawn, so our tour starts at that moment.
We’ll take our boat to Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.
We’ll walk a 3 km. wooden trail to reach the lake, where you’ll marvel at the exuberant biodiversity, spotting black caimans, giant otters, birds, and more.
03:00 PM: We’ll return to the lodge for lunch.
After that, we’ll visit a Matsigenka family and participate in their traditional activities, such as using bows and arrows, weaving cotton, and making clothing called “Cushma.”
We’ll learn how to make ropes from plant bark and start a fire using natural materials.
05:30 PM: We’ll return to the lodge at dusk and set out again to explore the nocturnal wildlife. Dinner and rest at the lodge.”
Day 3La Cachuela’s Clay Lick, River Fishing and Return to Puerto Maldonado
At 5:00 a.m., we will set sail upstream for 1 hour until we reach the clay lick of parrots and macaws “La Cachuela”. Here, you will have the opportunity to witness the spectacular sunrise and observe various species of parrots inhabiting the cliffs along the river. In this unpredictable jungle, you may also be lucky enough to spot toucans and sloths.
We will return to the lodge to enjoy a hearty breakfast. At 09:40 a.m., you will have the option to participate in an exciting sports fishing excursion, where you can experience the diversity of the Amazonian ichthyofauna.
During this activity, we will have the opportunity to fish for species such as catfish, cichlids, and freshwater stingrays.
After lunch, you can relax peacefully in our hammocks, enjoying the peace and serenity of the surroundings. Later, we will prepare to return to the city. We will gather our luggage and head to the airport 2 hours before your flight.
At 5:00 p.m., we will be at the bus station ready to return to Cusco or Puno. The Tambopata Reserve and Manu Reserve is a place to enjoy wildlife.
